Friction is good! Yes it is good. Without
it, loads of things would be different.
To take a step to the left, you apply a force to the
right.
Without friction, you could not apply a force sideways
to the ground, and you would be stuck where you were!
So the next time you see a motor oil commercial that
boasts about reducing evil engine friction, you must also realize that
if there were no friction, the car the motor is in would be paralyzed!!!
So does friction always hinder motion?
In many cases we want to reduce friction,
like in hinges. In many others we want to increase it, like when
your car is stuck in a snowdrift.
