To make machines work, something must be done...  It could be as easy as pushing the gas pedal in a car, or as hard as wedging a shovel into some dirt.

In any case, machines are made to do work.  The simple equation that describes how much work is done is:   W = f * d ,   or work = force * distance

Look at these two pairs of scissors:

Which pair could cut through tougher material?

How do you know?

Which pair could cut paper fastest?

Which pair could apply the most force to the object being cut?

Which pair makes your fingers move the most?

If the distance you must move is increased, does the work get easier or harder?
